Description
This artifact is a polychrome painted Lokapala (Heavenly King), dating to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) in China. These protective mingqi (funerary figurines) were placed in tombs to ward off evil spirits. The figure features a fierce expression, elaborate armor with a peacock feather sharped headdress and is depicted triumphantly standing on a recumbent ox. This pose is said to have depicted the Lokapala defeating an Evil spirit. These tomb ceramics reflect the blending of Buddhist traditions and Taoist burial practices along the Silk Road.
The polychrome pigments show some wear consistent with its age as seen in detail photo.
