Description
This piece is a Chinese Zhou dynasty bronze ritual vessel or gui, an archaistic incense censer. A deep, rounded bowl resting on a ring foot, fitted with two large, loop handles shaped like dragon heads. The outer body features low-relief carvings that look like archaic taotie (stylized animal face) masks set against a geometric key-fret background.
The 16 characters on the bottom translate to"In the fourth month, during the lunar phase following the full moon, on the day of Dinghai, the Central Historiographer commissioned and made this precious gui vessel for ceremonial use."
There are a couple of chips in the rim, shown in detail pics. In general, this piece simply shows its age in the wear and patina and is considered good condition and rather desirable for its age.
