Qing Armorial Water plate
Description
Double walled Qing dynasty water dish, 1” thick.
The center features a shield with scrolled leaf, individually half painted flowers and garland supports, surrounded by a peach/sepia and gilt decorated border. Unlike a standard dinner plate, these dishes were designed with a hollow interior. The handles on the sides openings were both functional and decorative. One is fixed and the other hollow, where hot water could be poured to keep food warm during long meals. These were specifically produced in China for the export market, often commissioned for European or Indian households.
Approximately 9 3/4” diameter by 2” high. (without extensions. 11” with.)
Minor rubbing to the gilt border.
