Tang Double-Gourd Bronze Vase
Description
This bronze gourd vase is from the Tang dynasty. The rough, textured inner recess and dark, variable tones inside the square base indicate it was made using a lost-wax casting method. This is standard for antique Asian bronzes. The crusty, reddish-brown and yellowish material inside the hollow cavity is remnants of the clay/sand casting core. Leaving this core material inside the foot or base is highly characteristic of authentic antique bronzes rather than modern, lightweight spun-metal reproductions.
This bronze vase is in good condition with no major flaws, just wear consistent with its age and use.
