Pair of Chinese Heron Candelsticks

This pair of Chinese candelsticks featuring herons standing on the backs of turtles is rendered in Chinese silver(not quite 925) with coral and turquoise stones inlaid in the turtles' carapaces and the cranes heads. The nephrite inserts (thumb rings) are held tight with stylized clouds or billowing smoke. The carapaces of the turtles show sea weed trailing over them.

In Chinese lore the heron standing on the turtle's back is a symbol of longevity, friendship and the harmony of heaven and earth.

These candelabra are in good original condition. One coral stone is missing from one turtle and there appear losses at the necks of the herons toward the front. The remainder of the wear is consistent with age and use.
