Description
This vintage Satsuma bowl is 5-lobed and features white cartouches on a blue and gold field. Iris, peonies and chrysanthemums (the Japanese imperial house symbol) fill the cartouches.
The two hand-painted gold characters inside the iron-red rectangular seal read 九谷 (Kutani). The word translates literally to "Nine Valleys," which refers to the geographic region and village in the Ishikawa Prefecture where this style of ceramics originated.
This bowl is in good original condition with no noteworthy imperfections or flaws and the wear consistent with age and use.
